Frederick William Brind, the nephew of General Sir James Brind, was born to Walter (III) and Anne Brind.  He is listed in "A list of the wardens, assistants and livery, of the Worshipful Company of Goldsmiths, London"  He joined in 1849, but at the time of publication, in 1907, is listed living at 13, Maze Hill, St. Leonards-on-Sea.

Frederick William appears to have inherited his Cousin Charles' wine business in the City (http://www.leamarsh.com/sites/starter/Brind/ft/david/thom3.html#Charleswill).  He was a Freeman in 1845 and Livery in 1848.

In 1848 Frederick William Brind married Mary Ann Elliott.  Their elder daughter Marian Harriet, was born in 1850.  On the day of the 1851 census Frederick William, Mary Ann and Marian were living at 52 Stamford Hill with a cook, a housemaid and a nursemaid.  A second daughter, Amy Alice, was born in 1852, but the family was broken up in 1854 when Mary Ann Brind died.

In 1861 Frederick William Brind married Julia Mary McRae in her local church in Upper Holloway, north London.  In the 1861 census the expanded family are at Weldon Lodge, Lawrie Park, Beckenham:  Frederick William, Julia Mary, Frederick William’s mother Anne, Marian and Amy; a cook, nurse and housemaid.  Frederick William and Julia Mary had three children: Walter, who died aged only a few weeks, in 1863, within a few weeks of Anne Brind’s death and is buried with her; [Ann relict of late Walter BRIND of Coventry 3 August 1863 aged 72. Walter infant son of Frederick William and Julia Mary Brind died 17 July 1863. [St George’s Church, Beckenham]; ] Frank (born 1866) and Julia Margaret (born 1869).

The family moved to 2 Annandale, Bromley, where they were living by 1871; and then, around 1879[sic], further out of London again, to Chelsfield near Orpington, where they leased Chelsfield Lodge.

“”Frederick William Brind, described as a wealthy wine merchant, rented the Court Lodge at Chelsfield, with some surrounding land, from about 1873.  Randolph Caldecott met and wooed Frederick Brind's daughter Marian and they were married in Chelsfield.  His Uncle, General Sir James, and Lady Brind, attended the wedding of Marian to the well known artist Randolph Caldecott and signed the Marriage Register.”

In the 1881 Census Frederick William was living at the Court Lodge, aged 57, with his second wife Julia, aged 44, daughter Julia aged 12, her governess Caroline Pattison, a cook, two parlour maids and a butler.  Frederick's occupation is shown as wine merchant, born Coventry.

In the 1891 Census, his daughter, Marian Caldecott, then a widow, was staying at the Court Lodge.  Also at home at that time were her sister Amy and half brother Frank, an architectural assistant, and her half sister Julia, together with her father's nephew, Ernest W Brind, merchant's clerk, plus a visitor Margaret Braddish and cook, parlourmaid, housemaid and kitchenmaid, with a coachman and his family living in the coach house nearby

In censuses between 1851 and 1891 he described himself as a wine merchant, but in fact he was involved in a number of business ventures.  The biggest, and the one that gave him most trouble, was the Patent Woollen Cloth Company.
