VETERAN GENERAL’S DEATH.

FUNERAL ST. MATTHEW’S.

We regret to record the death Lieutenant-General William Hull Caine, late Royal Artillery (Madras), Birdwood,The Green, St. Leonards.

General Caine, who was in his seventieth year, passed away suddenly at Haywards Heath, where he was spending a holiday, on the 25th ult.  He had resided at St. Leonards about three or four years, and had taken great interest in the recent formation of a local branch the National Service league; he was member of the General Committee. General Caine, the son of Colonel W, Caine, Lieutenant Governor of Hong Kong. became Lieutenant in the Madras Artillery in 1855, and was in the Indian Mutiny, subsequently he filled the distinguished position of Adjutant-General of the Royal Artillery at Madras, and in 1885- 87 commanded the Royal Artillery in Egypt.  He commanded the Southern Division of the Royal Artillery in Cork in 1887-89.  In 1892 he retired, and was made a Lieutenant- General.  He married Agnes, eldest daughter the late Sir Richard Meade, K.C.S.T., formerly Resident at Hydrabad, who survives him.  The funeral service took place at St. Matthew’s Church (where the deceased Officer had been a worshipper) on Thursday afternoon.  The Rev. Andrew Melliss officiated.   Mr. Horatio Robinson presided at the organ, and played Chopin’s "Marche Funere.” The hymns were, "On His Resurrection Morn,” and "Peace, Perfect Peace.” The coffin was covered with the flag on which were placed the deceased Officer's sword and numerous floral tributes.....

Agnes Caine wrote some notes describing her father's last illness and death, written for Thomas Thornton, biographer.

CAINE.—On November 3rd, 1946, at 52, Sedlescombe-road South, St. Leonards, Agnes Shakespeare, widow of General W. Hull Caine and eldest daughter of General Sir Richard Meade, aged 86.  Cremated Bnghton Wednesday last.  Interment of ashes at Hastings Borough Cemetery on Thursday, November 7th. 1946.

Mrs. Agnes Shakespeare Caine, of 52. Sedleseombe-road South, St. Leonards, who died November 3rd, widow of General William Hull Caine, R.A., and daughter of the late General Sir Richard Meade, left £6,698.  She left £5OO to her dear friend, Lucy Macpherson, and £5O each to Frances J. Parsons and Mabel K. Britt, if still In her service.
