Dr. John Benjamin Goldberg belonged to the “Perushim” sect of Ashkenazi Jews – the modern successors of the Pharisees.  He was one of a number of rabbis and learned men, who were converted to Christianity in Jerusalem in the first half of the nineteenth century.  He was baptized in Christ Church, Jerusalem by Nicolayson, in 1843.  As a result he suffered persecution and loss of property.  In 1847 he is a preacher of the Gospel to his brethren in Cairo.  Unfortunately Goldberg had to leave Cairo as the heat had injured his eyesight, he was then transferred to Salonica.  In 1851 he was appointed as missionary at Constantinople, and from there he went, in 1860, to Smyrna.  Goldberg was a most spiritually-minded and lovable man.  (Once again, owing to ill-health Goldberg had to leave Smyrna in 1866)

His latter years he spent in England, and in 1874 he contributed to the "Hebrew Christian Witness,", two learned and very valuable and extensive articles on "The Language of Christ," and on "The Future Division of the Land of Israel." He was a brilliant Hebrew and Talmudic scholar, and humble- minded withal, as may be gathered from the words which he himself selected for his epitaph, " A lost sheep of the house of Israel found by the Good Shepherd."

Isabella was born in 1815.  She was the daughter of Slingsby Duncombe and Martha Elvy.

Census 1851: Isabella is recorded in the household of her parents at Bryanton Square, Marylebone, Middlesex, England. Aged 35

John and Isabella were married in Turin (Italy) on 12th May 1858.  It was reported in a number of local English newspapers:

May 12, by the Rev. C. L. Lauria, at the British Embassy, Turin, the Rev. J. B. Goldberg, missionary, of the London Society promoting Christianity amongst the Jews, to Miss Isabella Duncombe, fourth daughter of the late Slingsby Duncombe. Esq.
