GRAVES, Charles Atkins, 1834/5-
12th April 1835: baptism at Folkestone of Charles Atkins Graves, son of John and Ann Graves He became an artist, a local drawing master, and according to John Mainwaring Baines, made useful topographical pictures.
With Charles Stevens he opened the School of Art and Design in Robertson Street (entrance from no. 3 Cambridge Rd), in 1863. By 1874 he was a teacher of drawing and painting at no.6 Castle Terrace. He died, aged 83, at 105 London Road, St Leonards.
1873: His "Beckley Church, Sussex" was exhibited at the Royal Society of British Artists.
1884: His "Moonlit sea" was exhibited at the Royal Academy. His address was given as 57 Kenilworth Road, St Leonards.
