Jane Head & Family continued

According to one family tree they had seven children, including an ‘unknown infant’.

In the 1851 census, where Jane Elizabeth is shown as the head of the household, at Coburg Place we have:


Mary Jane, age 18, born in Rye. [died 30 Jul 1905]


Elizabeth , age 17, born in Winchelsea [married Charles Alexander McMahon, Lt. 39th Native Infantry, Sealkote, 3 Mar 1857.  Michael Dawes and his family were in Sealkote too in 1857. Elizabeth died of cholera, Delhi 5 Dec 1866. India]


Emily Katherine, age 16, born in Tunbridge [sic] [died 1905]


Katherine Dawes Head– not listed in 1851 census.  A Katherine Dawes Head married John Fraser Raper in Hastings, 1858 (confirmed same person) [Baptised Clpaham 1837 .  Their daughter Sophia Ursula married a grandson of Daniel Butler Dawes.

Maria J, age 7, born in Hastings. (This seems to be a mistake, see below)


Addendum - The youngest daughter was Julia Maria Head 1844 - 1920.  She shared a home with her sister Emily Katherine for many years, in St. Leonards. 1891 census - 6 Edward Rd

Charles Franklin Head - Death - 5 Apr 1849, Clifton

Lieut.-Col. unattached, and late of the Queen's Royal (2nd regiment).  He entered the service in 1811, and became a Lieut.- Col. on the occasion of the Prince of Wales's brevet in 1841.  He served with the 93rd Highlanders during the expedition to South America and the campaign in New Orleans.  He subsequently proceeded to India, and was there employed for many years.  He acted as Assistant Quartermaster Gen. to the force assembled before Kolapore, in the Southern Mahratta; and was employed in Canada in a particular service during the late outbreak.  During his late years of service he was connected with the 2nd Royals.  (Gentleman's Magazine May 1849 p.554)
