Joseph was the eldest son of Joseph and Charlotte.  Like his father he was a watchmaker and jeweller.  He married Maria Wenham on 8th August 1838 (Sussex Marriage Index:  Hastings All Saints)

Dated 21 Nov 1850. Signed satement on verso by J H Job, 24 Jun 1857 that Avery had completed his apprenticeship with all its provisions (New Zealand National Library)
