Fanny Australia Morphett Daughter of George and Ann Morphett Died 1st June 1875 Aged 36

George Morphett (21 May 1811 – 1893) married Ann (Katherine Ann in his Will) Hitchcock in 1835. (AB L22 records four members of a Hitchcock family, one of whom is named Fanny.  Also in 1867 there is a Mrs. Hitchcock living nearby in Magdalen Road.  At the moment conjecture is all we have to go on.”

 

When the Secondary Towns Association was formed in London in October 1838 for the purpose of establishing sites for secondary towns in the colony of South Australia, Morphett was appointed its Secretary.  He and Ann emigrated to South Australia, with their two children, arriving at Holdfast Bay on 12 December 1840 on the Brightman.

They lived at North Adelaide, where George set up a legal practice in the city before going back to England.

They returned to South Australia in 1846 on the barque Enmore with three children, disembarking with four.

 Nathaniel George Morphett (born 16 March 1840, Clerkenwell, died 23 September 1872), educated at Highgate School from 1849 to 1857

 A daughter  Mary Jane, (born on 7 January 1846 aboard the Enmore from England)

 Eustace Morphett (born 21 December 1847, North Adelaide)

There are many people named Fanny Morphett but one of the right age is at what appears to be a school or lodging in Finchley Road, London in 1851, and in 1861 she is shown as the head of the household in the High Street, Prittlewell, Essex.  Resident also is “Guslea” Morphett, whose details match those of her brother Eustace.

In 1868 George and Anne at least appear to be in Tunbridge Wells - MORPHETT, George Esquire formerly of Adelaide but now of Tunbridge Wells, Kent, England 1868 

Ann died in 1874.

In 1875 we have a precise address - George Morphett, Esq., of 19, Magdalen-road, St. Leonards-on-Sea

Other announcements of her death say that she was the only surviving daughter, and died of heart disease.
